Sarah Marshall? DUH Can't remember her

There was a movie, I think it was called Forgetting Sarah Marshall. I hope I have that title right, it is rare for me to watch a movie and I never finished watching that one.

I did finished the painting that I started there, there at Turtle Bay with my magic french easel

and my acrylic paints. I loved painting there, but would have been okay with the option of

sitting under an umbrella with a Mai Tai and dreaming of ....my next Mai Tai~~~~hmmmmmm

Kapiolani Park is on the Diamond Head side of Waikiki.

This week the local gov't got all the TENT PEOPLE

out of Kapiolani Park and for the most part they all moved

down to Ala Moana Park. I noticed around noon that

they started to come back....even though their tents

are not allowed , they still want to have lunch at HOME.

One of the guys that lives in the park took a look at my

painting right before he sprawled out his beach mat

beside the public restroom wall and took a snooze.

The birds bothered him a little but he seemed content

as he snored in with a roar and out with a unique blowing

of the beard.

I realize this is NOT what you see in the painting.

Nor do you see the 4 groups of lovely Japanese School

girls who bowed when they politely asked to take my picture.

Nor do you see the Hawaiian man with the island accent, deep dark brown

skin and yellow sunglasses for eyes. Nor do you see the man in the

motorized wheel chair who told me this joke " why are the palm trees crooked?

answer--because the gov't planted them."

Nor do you see the life guard station with the lovely young female lifeguard,

or the crazy lady that kept yelling "Richard Sansalvador" randomly , or the pigeons that

were sneaking up on me to steal my breakfast burrito , or the cool Dad walking

with his family and playing the Ukulele and singing a lovely ballad.

yep, it looks so serene and relaxing...

but

paradise can be a little chaotic to manage, everyone wants to pitch their tent in it.

darling little HOLE IN THE WALL

okay, it's not finished but I was painting outside in the CRAZY wind and RAIN..really.

I should get a BADGE for this. I am the boyscout of Painters.

Again , this is the little hole in the wall COCKTAIL BAR that will soon be a Pizza BOB's.

It is just so cute I can't stand it.

Mark Brown (my teacher, mentor and friend) also painted this joint the day before.

When and if I ever paint this good I will be dancing around like a big proud rooster!

COCKTAIL BAR versus PIZZA BOB

Okay , I got the scoop from a passer by with no teeth , so I could barely make out the details,

but it seems that PIZZA BOB of Haliewa is going to lease the big Fisherman's Wharf building.

SO,

PIZZA IN COMING to the Kewalo Basin area.

I live in Kaka'ako and I am all about the PIZZA.

BUT , with all that said, let's all paint a picture of this little drinker's paradise before it is gone for good.

AND if we have money leftover after we purchase a pizza, we need to buy that dude some TEEF!

Fisherman's Wharf in Honolulu

COCKTAIL BAR



This is the cocktail bar beside the Fisherman's Wharf in Honolulu. I was painting it today in the rain and a young surfer guy drove up and stopped on his way to the beach. He asked what I was painting and I told him. He said" wow, that is an historical building from the 60's". I had to smile when I told him to be a little gentle with the grandmas. The reference to HISTORICAL and 60's in the same sentence was a bit much for me to handle. He laughed and apologized and drove off in his beat up old mercedes with his curly blonde hair blowing in the wind.

Yep this old building had it's hayday. It is well remembered. A new generation comes along to call it an antique. OUCH! I AM THAT OLD BUILDING!



I did hear later that day from some bikers that came by in the rain that this building has been sold and will be a pizza joint.



I sure am glad I got pictures of it before the transformation takes place. It is only a hole in the wall but I am sure it was a place of fun over looking Kewalo Basin Marina.

Palms --- 2500 varieties

The Saturday morning Plein aire group paints with MARK BROWN from the University of Hawaii program . His demos are amazing and this week we went to the Botanical garden to paint GREEN on GREEN. The picture above is of a ravine area that overlooks the giant palm and Savannah trees. I will have to get you some more information about this garden because they have an unbelievable amount of orchids growing there. I can't wait to see those in bloom.

Hale Koa

Hale Koa is the hotel for the military. Where there is Military, there are BARS...go figure.

I love the outdoor bar area at the Hale Koa. You'd think I could meet a rich ADMIRAL to date.

I need to paint less and drink more I suppose!

Well , this is a shout out to those at the Mai Tai Bar at the lovely Hale Koa, tell all those Generals and Admirals that I like my Mai Tais with TWO umbrellas.

Go to Manoa to experience a close up view of huge rainbows.
Go to Manoa to see lush green space.
Go to Manoa to see the Chinese Cemetery (painting above of that area)

It is lovely but LOTS OF RAIN.

dream of forgetting to get dressed

I used to dream that I forgot to get dressed. I hear that it is a fairly common dream. I looked it up in a dream book once and it suggested that it represents being unprepared.

I go to a Life Drawing class in Honolulu. The class always has a wonderful model and Mark N. Brown conducts the class at the Academy of Arts in Honolulu. You can be sure you'll get a lively group if you attend...and what's more, it's a DROP in class so you don't have to sign up in advance. It would, however, be nice if you let Mark know you were coming ( in case you are a nut and he needs to know in advance) hee hee.

Anyway, I no longer dream that I'll SHOW up Undressed to work.I am still unprepared for things in my life, but evidently I don't care enough to make it manifest in to a DREAM!

HELLO there Bloggers,

I want to tell you about the

Contemporary Art Museum in Makiki Heights, Honolulu, Hawaii.

They have a lovely cafe with yummy sandwiches in a quiet setting (hard to find a quiet place to eat in Honolulu). You will love the sculpture with in your view while eating.

It is called "DROPPED BRA".

If I remember correctly it was produced in the 80's so it is not a NEW piece of art. I hate to tell you that I don't remember the ARTIST but I promise to find out.

When you get to Honolulu, please drive UP to Makiki, to the museum and have a latte and stare at this piece. It will not make you think, I promise (and I love love love not thinking). We should try doing it once a day for 15 minutes or so....even if you are not BLOND.

my hands are full

MY HANDS ARE FULL

I love seeing the moms on the beach carry tons of beach stuff and still manage their children.

When I was first a mom I thought God had made a mistake when he decided on only two arms and hands for women. It seems that we needed 4 or 5 . I suppose that God knew what he was doing. I think that if we had 5 arms we could reign our children in .....maybe they are supposed to run away and exercise their independence. HMMMM

Kewalo Basin Honolulu Hawaii

Painted Plein Aire at Kewalo Basin Park, this is a haven for Surfers and body boarders.
The waves are JUST right , although the advanced surfers still need the North Shore.
I painted this small canvas on my magic French Easel (not always so magic).
What a great "FEEL GOOD" day. I think I heard the waves calling me in.

KULA KAI

The Kula Kai is an old fishing boat in the Hawaiian style, complete with round dark Hawaiian man mending nets. This boat sits proud and still this week at the Kewalo Basin park. I took a few

pictures hoping that I could paint this beautiful 80 ft "last of it's kind "wooden vessel.

Amazing how much damage I can do to a canvas when I don't put down a strong drawing FIRST. I should have taken more time to get the information down and perspective right. I made a lot of mistakes on the painting and now I have to fix all the problems.

I was so frustrated when I realized how "OFF" my basic drawing was. I managed to get some motivation from watching the man in the palm hat as he mended his nets. Those nets are the key to his livelihood. He HAS to fix them. NO FISH NO INCOME!!!

I know this painting CAN BE FIXED.

"Paint or don't eat" .. that quote has some motivational qualities to it.

more WAVES?

Crazy thought, how many wave pictures can I paint in a month? The plan would be to take them to the ZOO FENCE in Waikiki and sell them on the weekend with the rest of the starving artists of Hawaii. I think that is the PLAN, but for now, gotta go to work...NO WAVES THERE.

Set of Three or Two- HOW THE WAVES BREAK

My wave riding boogie boarding friends all had theories of "HOW THE WAVES BREAK". I remember that the cadence was important to understand. If you could time those waves you could actually get a chance to stand up in between and compose yourself......or run.
At the North Shore the waves are more sheer like huge veils hung high and white lace falling over them.
My palette pales in comparison.

Lindsay Graves and I stood in the surf in Nags Head North Carolina waiting for the next wave.
As the tide came in they came at us faster and faster. Lindsay was a freckle face girl, and she wore her rubber nose plug round her neck. She was fearless, she was my friend. Thank you Lindsay for braving the waves with me. You were one tough cookie.
I don't think we ever got strong enough to handle the North Shore waves in Hawaii. That is a different ball game. These relentless waves crash hard on a rocky shore. I think even Lindsay would have opted for a beach chair and a PBJ.

calm versus chaos

The cost of living in Hawaii is very high. Most of the locals I know work 3 jobs to make ends meet.
On top of that the State has the kids off on Friday to save money.
So there is not a lot of relaxing going on. No one is sitting in a hammock drinking Maitai cocktails.
NOPE, but if they did their view would be spectacular.

CALM , that is what we want, but instead of sitting in a beach chair and watching the surf, we shop.
CRAZY huh?

In charge of the wave

Awesome day at North shore had by all. I have not captured the full experience of that day but imagine this scene with 8 sea turtles swimming around and about 30 young surfers riding the waves.

Dude on a Board

The surf is not always mean, this day it was very easy to manuever and the novice surfers where out in numbers. I liked this guy because he had attitude....and cool hair.
The colors of the surf here in Hawaii are more amazing. What a beauitful place to play!

SURFER in HAWAII

This is the first surfer I painted while in Hawaii. I was on the beach at the North Shore and before I could even sit down in the sand I noticed a huge turtle swimming in the surf. He had about 7 or 8 friends and they all seemed to be enjoying the calm waters of North Shore along with the boogieboarders and surfers. I hope you like this series of paintings. It is the beginning of "a painting a day". I had a crush on a surfer once and I don't think I ever got over it.

Iolani Palace Honolulu Hawaii

Twenty or so artists paint along side Mark N. Brown every Saturday on O'ahu.
If you come to the island and want to paint , I suggest that you find him. He is a super host
for any painter that is eager to try an adventure in capturing the island. He is a joy to watch
as he paints large canvas and dances around his work. He loves to teach and you will learn a lot from his critiques.
The Iolani is lovely and well worth the visit.
The picture above is me at a 3/4 finish point of an acrylic painting. I have not added the Hawaiian flags as of yet but they are lovely blowing in the island breeze.

Planted

This design based acrylic painting was the first I painted in Honolulu. I painted it in the window

of a store front and sold it tonight at the E-1 Studio on Waimanu in Honolulu. I love the bright colors and have painted a small one similar that also sold.

Tonight we had our Christmas party for the Studio and my first time to eat POKE and MANDOO. The experience in Hawaii is more than palm trees and beach scenes. It is an island rich in asian cultures blended with native Hawaiian traditions. The most popular breakfast is a sushi style rice cake with SPAM!!! Poke is a great Tuna dish sushi style, and Mandoo is an awesome dumpling. We only had a small gathering for the FIRST STUDIO party but we are still building steam. Thanks to all that attended , what a blast.
