PAINTING A PEACOCK and THE MISSING MOON

PAINTING A PEACOCK

I am teaching Lia to paint and she came up with the idea of a 4 panel peacock.
I was not sure it could work, but WOW was I wrong. I am so excited about this
project and it looks great at each stage of the painting.

Lia is painting most of this with my instruction but I sent her home with the painting and "HOMEWORK". She is going to be painting the stems and greenery.

So , I was so smart and MS. KNOW IT ALL and we were plugg'in along painting when Lia realized we were missing the middle panel with the moon on it.

the missing moon appears

Okay, so that was a pretty obvious item that the teacher (me) should have picked up on.
There was a lot of giggling going on and the final painting will be wonderful but the "getting there" has been so much fun. I love the creative process. What a great way to spend a Friday morning.

Oh and Lia has named this Peacock LILA.
stay tuned for the next PEACOCK UPDATE

NORTH SHORE SURF COMPETITION

NORTH SHORE SURF CHAMPIONSHIP

(that's me with the backpack of watercolor supplies)
watercolor painting and poignant poem by Rebecca Snow of Honolulu

NORTH SHORE COMPETITION
There is always a crowd
where the surf is being rode
I can't always get there
cause the highway gets all slowed
by all the lucky tourists
they are eager for a glance
at the  men in fancy wetsuits
who on the waves do dance
but I got up early Sunday
started off at early church
just to get a parking space
and find a beach front perch
and so I was quite early
there were camera men in place
and all the wanna-be'ers had jealous on their face
the surfers they were bobbing and floating
so serene
not a wave in sight , the surf was glassy clean
and slowly as the morning broke
the waves arrived on time
to start the competition
and the scene , it all was mine.
the sun peeked like the shyest child and
there was a distant storm,
then gray , then blue, then silver pink
then chilly , hot, then warm.
the changes of the surfer sky came at us rolling fast
the perfection of this ocean time we wished would ever last
then one paddled and he missed it,
one paddled and he stood
one paddled and another
and everything was good.
and I was taken by the "still" that fell upon the crowd
the same as in our early church
and many of us bowed
we bowed our knees on beach towels
we raised our voice as one
we marveled at the beauty
facing star struck at the sun
it wasn't meant as worship
we'd not arrived to praise
but it just so happened
that all together we felt saved
We knew that God was present
We knew we were all blessed
the surfers got their trophies and I'm sure they did their best
but the winner was THE OCEAN
the runner up THE SKY
the competition stunned us
as the whales breached passing by.
so I just want to mention
that if you are da kine
come on to the North Shore
and worship any time.

Coveted Shade

Acrylic on Mahogany Board 11x14

There is a little cluster of palms near 1B life saving station. On busy days it is coveted for it's shade.
There will be Moms and babies sprawled out with all their gear, and paddle boarders taking a much needed break from the elements. It is just a little patch of grass and 4 palms but always a perfect hiding place from the gloriously persistent sun.

WINDY DECEPTION- unfinished version, halted for a coca-cola

I have painted 1B life saving station from many angles. Today I set up my French Easel in the shade along
the sidewalk. A family parked nearby and out came all their wares. They had the large 4 poster tent and
grill and coolers. The grandson in the group loved my cart and took off with it immediately. This is the way things are done here. The Queen is quoted as saying that this park was for her people. It is still that way.
They come and set up camp for a day. They bring everything they can with extended family in tow. It is a site
to behold.
I added no people in my painting. You can not even tell that it was a terribly windy day. It is deceiving.
There is no way to make Ala Moana Beach Park real, unless you add the people. They are the reason
the park exists. They are the energy that makes the sun shine and the waves crash. The locals here are
the sand and the coral, the palms and the sky. It is a lovely place because of them.

Thank you for allowing me to paint in the park that the Queen gave to you. It has been such a joy.

A PART OF THE MAIN

No man is an Island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the Continent, a part of the main; if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friends or of thine own were; any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankind; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee.

John Donne, Meditation XVII

English clergyman & poet (1572 - 1631)

Okay so that's a little over the top to explain a poor disjointed composition of random rocks and people.
Somehow, though, they are all connected, all part of the main.

how to paint an outrigger

Outrigger at Kailua

watercolor crayons

no matter what you want to paint you must get familiar with it

draw it

color it

paint it

over

and over

until

like Picasso's Bulls

the image is everywhere

and it flows from your fingers

to the paint brush

like your signature flows

from your pen.

I drew this with watercolor crayon and then touched it up with water to flow.

I just wanted another chance to know that scene at Kailua

and the angles of the Outriggers.

NOT A GREAT PAINTING

just a learning tool

Ho'omaluhia Plein Air Painting

SOLD

What an awesome day of birds singing, blue skies, cathedral-like mountain scenes, palms swaying, mongoose snatching, green on green on beauty day.

Please visit this location if you can. The park service has done a wonderful job of keeping this place pristine. You are allowed to camp overnight here but it does NOT feel like a campground.

There is a lake, and labeled examples of all types of vegetation.

Please go there to be in awe of this wonder.

1B

1B Life Guard Station
at ala moana beach park
painted March 20, 2010

Saturday at Ala Moana Beach Park is like ONE BIG FAMILY reunion.
The locals set up CAMP for their families and there are tents everywhere you look.
The paddleboarders are coming and going constantly and the moms and dads wash
their naked babies in the public shower under the palms. There is food under all the tents
and a lot of beautiful big hawaiian men overseeing the proceedings. I fall in love with
Hawaii all over again when I paint at Ala Moana Park on a Saturday.
